When you are under stress, the body releases more of the hormone cortisol. This affects sleep, appetite and other physical processes in a big way. It also has a very bad impact on mental health. This has a negative effect on the body, and raises blood sugar levels due to poor glucose metabolism.

Sadly, in the life of most people in the modern times, stress has become an integral part. It can hugely affect physical and mental health. You have to devise a proper stress management plan to prevent or manage diabetes problems.

How to Manage Stress for Diabetes Prevention / Management?

You can:

  • Try breathing exercises – Deep breathing is one of the easiest and best ways to manage stress. It can be beneficial for the body in many ways, such as relaxing your muscles and calming the mind. This is a very easy way to de-stress, and can work quickly.
  • Laugh more – Laughter is the best medicine, as you probably know, and it helps with diabetes as well. It can help bring down anxiety, reduce stress hormones, bring more happiness, relieve pain and also boost immunity.
  • Sleep – Daily, 7 – 8 hours of sleep is needed by the body. Deprivation of sleep can lead to various health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, strokes and heart diseases. When you get adequate sleep, you can focus better and feel healthier.
  • Join a Support Group – Reconnect with old friends, make new ones or join some support group. When you get someone to talk to, you can alleviate stress and tension much better.
  • Plan your time – With proper planning, you can manage your time and activities much better, and enjoy better quality life.

There are many other techniques, such as mediation, exercises, music etc, which can be useful for you in stress reduction and management. However, even when you are well-rested and de-stressed, do not ignore your mediations (if you are a diabetic already) and monitor your blood sugar levels regularly.
